Heartwood Theater Summer Camp

Spots are already filling, in Heartwood’s 16^th session of summer camp for students entering grades 3-12, scheduled July 2nd thru 12th.   Heartwood’s theater camps teach performance skills and promote student confidence both on and off the stage.

“Kids Camp” is a popular 8-day program exploring the areas of storytelling, stage combat, improvisation, Broadway dance, mime/movement and acting, designed specifically for students entering grades 3-8.  No prior experience necessary.

For middle school students who have previous theater experience and for high school students, the 8-day “Intensives Camp” focuses on the multiple areas of Broadway dance, scene work, stage combat, classic/poetic language, improvisation, mime/movement and monologues. 

All students will work with a diverse and professional staff: Griff Braley, Heartwood’s Artistic Director and LA Drama Teacher; Alison Machaiek, award winning Drama Instructor at Oceanside High School in Rockland; Broadway Choreographer/Singer/Dancer/Actress Michelle Bruckner; Karen Montanaro, Mime/Dance Artist and Teacher; and Mark Bedell, certified fight master and professional stuntman / fight choreographer.

The student/teacher ratio is very low, with the help of several professional actors in residence for Heartwood’s summer production of “The Secret Garden,” who will work closely with students, sharing their acting experience and enthusiasm for the stage.

“Positive Behavioral Supports & Tantrum Management: Self-Preservation & Success in Parenting Children with Behavioral Health Needs” Presented by Karen Willey, Regional Parent Support Coordinator

Do you sometimes feel like you don’t know how to help your child? Children with behavioral health needs do not come with a manual! This workshop will offer a framework to understand the nature of your child’s behavior and methods to flexibly respond to the needs your child presents. Positive behavioral supports emphasize practical ideas about how to meet your child where they are and utilize their motivation to increase success. Understanding and using Stage of Change concepts, maximizing provider involvement and enhancing natural supports will be emphasized to provide usable tools that can be applied in a variety of real life situations. Temper tantrums are disruptive behavior or emotional outbursts displayed in response to unmet needs or desires. Come and learn how to manage your child’s tantrums by using positive behavioral supports!
